BCP 501 – Business Continuity Review
BCP 501 is a fast-paced review of The Professional Practices for Business Continuity Management in preparation for the Qualifying Exam. Successful completion of the Exam, qualifies an individual to subsequently apply for any level of DRI certification. Certification is an additional process, comprised of verification of knowledge and confirmation of experience. More on the certification process. Course Duration This is a 2,5-day course, which includes 16 hours of instruction followed by the Qualifying Exam (day 3). Outline Lesson 1: Program Initiation and Management (PP1) In this lesson you will review establishing the need for a business continuity program and obtaining management support. You will also review organizing and managing the process of developing a business continuity program and projects. Lesson 2: Risk Evaluation and Control (PP2) This lesson reviews Risk Management basic concepts and covers the methodologies and models used in the Business Continuity Management (BCM) profession, including the risk assessment, its importance to a business continuity program, the elements of a risk assessment, and how these are used to build a BCM program. Lesson 3: Business Impact Analysis (PP3) This lesson reviews the Business Impact Analysis, including its methodologies, terms and definitions such as business function and process criticality, interdependencies, Recovery Time Objective (RTO), Recovery Point Objective (RPO), and organizational impacts. Lesson 4: Developing Business Continuity Strategies (PP4) This lesson reviews the challenges of selecting the appropriate strategies for recovery of business processes, critical functions, operations and the supporting information technologies within the specified recovery objectives, alternative strategies, assesses the strengths and weaknesses of strategies, and methodologies for presentation to management directly linked and supported by the risk assessment and BIA. Lesson 5: Emergency Preparedness and Response (PP5) The purpose of this lesson is to review emergency management structure and the planning necessary to manage a crisis, including identification, escalation, and notification procedures. It covers emergency evacuation programs in place in organizations, life safety procedures, emergency response procedures, and plan activation procedures. Activation of the Emergency Operations Center and corresponding command centers, securing the area, assessing the damage, and salvage and restoration activities will also be reviewed. Lesson 6: Business Continuity Plan Development and Implementation (PP6) In this lesson, you will review the application of skills and information gathered in putting the BCM program into action by identifying the components of the planning process including plan methodology, implementation, organization, and documentation. You will review the plan document that best meets the needs of the organization and the personnel are most comfortable with using will be the plan document structure that is successful. This chapter will conclude with the elements of plan administration and plan documentation. Lesson 7: Awareness and Training Programs (PP7) In this lesson, students will review developing and implementing a program to establish and maintain awareness about the BCM Program and to train the staff so that they are prepared to respond during an event. Lesson 8: Plan Exercise, Audit and Maintenance (PP8) The goal of this lesson is to review the components needed to establish an exercise, testing, maintenance and audit program. The Business Continuity Management (BCM) exercises, change management program, and establishing an audit process to validate BCM plans are complete and accurate and in compliance with organizational goals and industry standards as appropriate. Lesson 9: Crisis Communications (PP9) This lesson reviews developing procedures that will allow you to effectively communicate with all audiences, identifying and training spokespersons, to develop key messages, and to work effectively with the media. Lesson 10: Coordination with External Agencies (PP10) In Lesson 10, the student will review communication techniques, investigate partnering, and also review the Incident Command System. You will also review compliance issues with applicable statutes or regulations, terminology, priorities of first responders, and how to interface with emergency agencies.
